FARRIER APPOINTMENT SERVICE TEAM, INC.
NEWSLETTER  OCTOBER 2004

Wow! It’s Mid-October already!

This is a great time to start looking at what will help your business grow next year. Make a list of the things you would like you and your business to accomplish before the New Year begins. We all want to be successful so here are a few suggestions:

  • Attend conferences, conventions, and clinics. This will help you improve your skills and incorporate new business projects and products to enhance your business.
  • Find an accountant if you do not already have one. Accountants can make your life easier come April. I realize it is hard to find someone that knows the horseshoeing industry. Ask friends or other horseshoers who they would recommend. I found a wonderful accountant through a friend. Most accountants will be happy to do a free consultation with you just to get your business. After the consultation, you can pretty much tell if this is the accountant for you. Keep trying until you find the accountant to fit your needs. My accountant does out of state clients, also. If I decide to move to a different state, I can keep the same accountant.
  • Read Rich Dad, Poor Dad, by Robert T. Kiyosaki.
  • Make your business into an LLC or Corporation for tax purposes and/or liability. Your accountant will be able to tell you what is best for your business. My accountant advised me that an s-corporation is the best for my business. I incorporated and then my accountant turned it into an s-corporation. You do not need a lawyer for incorporating your business. Go to the Secretary of State in your state. You can do this by e-mail. Fill out the form and submit it with your payment. It cost me $100.00 to incorporate in the state of Colorado, but right now it is only 99 cents. (I could have saved $99.01 had I waited, but who knew?) You do the same thing for an LLC. Give all the information to your accountant and the accountant will take it from there.
  • Refresh your old business cards or have some made. Farriers’ Greeting Cards, www.hoofprints.com, has a great selection.
  • Notify your customers of any rate increase for next year. This will eliminate any “increase shock” in January. Be prepared to explain why you are increasing your rates in a positive manner. Examples: Cost of materials has increased. You are improving your skill level in 2005 by attending clinics and/or learning from a mentor. Cost of living increase. Your business is expanding and you must grow with it to give your customers the best customer service possible.

I would like to include information from you, the farrier in future newsletters. Maybe you have some words of wisdom that can benefit others. You may have some news that you would like others to know about or maybe you attended a clinic that you thought was well worth your time. We all benefit from sharing. You can send your information to carla@farrierappointmentserviceteam.com . Please make sure you give me your name and what state you are from so I can give you proper acknowledgement for the piece.
